Spray roses have from 3 to 5 heads on one stem, and this is their main difference from standard roses, which have one large bud per stem. Spray roses are ideal for adding texture to bouquets, centerpieces and other small arrangements. But you can also combine them with other roses, flowers and greenery in larger bouquets for a dense and lush look. Spray roses are usually labeled as miniature roses.

They look fine and delicate, but in a single stem they carry the strength and volume of an entire bouquet. It is no coincidence that florists call them the little queens of the arrangement.

The path of selection of spray roses is interesting

Everything starts with crossing two different kinds of roses. The combinations are carefully chosen, and then comes the fun part – pollination. With the help of a small brush, pollen is transferred from one flower to another. This is delicate work, done entirely by hand, and in fact replaces the work of the bees.

From these crosses, hundreds of thousands of combinations are created every year, producing around millions of seeds. Not all of these seeds grow, but about a third do. The seeds are chilled for three months (to help them germinate) and are then planted in pots. Once the seedlings appear, it is time for the first big selection.

In this first round of selection, the teams look at the color, the number of petals, the health of the plants and how glossy or matte the leaves are. Only the strongest and most beautiful seedlings move on. Of the initial group, about 95% are filtered out, leaving still thousands to continue growing. The promising spray rose plants are then repotted so that they can mature.

After a few months the second selection takes place. This time the focus is on growth and production. Is the plant growing well? How many blooms does it produce? Again, only the best plants move on.
